Baby Bunnies (Callie Edition)

Sunny

You may be wondering, " Woah, how did you go from introducing your homestead, to suddenly having baby bunnies? When did this happen?"
We know, we're guilty.  There hasn't been many posts recently on the blog. Why, you ask? Let me tell you.

April 13th, we went to someone's house to breed our rabbits. Callie was originally going to be bred with a solid red male. He ended up being very lazy and, after about 20 minutes, we gave up on him. We put Callie in with a broken red next, and it worked right away. We left them for about 4 hours, and came back to pick them up later on.

We had been preparing for months before even planning to have babies. We thought the chapter on breeding in the book "Storey's Guide To Rabbits"  by Bob Bennett was very helpful. It taught us to Palpate the bunnies.

We waited for about a week, and soon we saw a significant change in their behavior, and bodies. They started moving peices of hay around, and became much more calm and friendly.

Now here we are back on May 14th. We had seen Maggie build her nest (and destroy it) a couple of times, but other than her weight and symptoms, Callie wasn't showing any signs of pregnancy. We were worried. Maggie had even started pulling her fur. We figured Callie would start pulling her fur and making a nest all in the same day she would give birth. Well, let me just say we were right. That very morning, we gave the bunnies hay, and we noticed Callie was building a tall (ish) wall in a corner of her box. She then proceeded to knock it down in a flawless leap, pulling it in with her back feet so it made a nest shape. I went out to check her later in the day, and I realized she was in her box, giving birth! We went in and gently moved around the fur to see the babies after a couple hours (we waited so we could give Callie a bit to relax), but it wasn't until the next day that we went in. We found out that we had two beautiful babies. We've Decided to nickname the Larger one Sunny, and the tiny one Pickles.
Pickles

I was surprised at how calm Callie was with us being in there. We were told all these things about being safe (the mom will sometimes get agressive to protect her babies),but she was just chilling out in the sunny area of her hutch. She only really came into the box with us when there were multiple people crowding around.  Sometimes, she would hang out in the nesting box with us.

Hey, mom. Whatcha doing?

We will be doing weekly updates (hopdates) on the babies, so stay tuned for those. Also, Maggie will be having her babies any day now, so make sure to keep checking for new posts.
See you guys soon!!!!
